The Garden Bedroom - Double room
|
The Double room, called the Garden Room, has loads of character
to surprise and delight our guests. It is very spacious and has
lovely old-fashioned French Windows that lead directly to the
south-facing rear gardens. In summer, this is a great suntrap
to lie out in. Called the Sun Room, the Single Room, looks out
to the front gardens, the Firth of Forth and the hills beyond.
Bunk Beds can be put in here (or anywhere else) on request.

The Twin Room

|
The
Sun Room
|
The Twin Room has the same view as the Sun Room and is both spacious
and comfortable. The strangely long "tunnel" from the main room
to its window is the depth of the outer wall of the house at that
point. This room once boasted a very large fireplace that included
bread ovens, which were built in to the wall. These were rediscovered
in 1965 when the extension was built to this apartment, and are
still there behind the tunnel walls.
|
The large sitting room, with its open fire and beamed ceiling,
offers guests a comfortable space in which to relax during the evening.
There is a widescreen TV and you are welcome to use the DVD or Video
Player to watch anything from our extensive library of films. This
room is also equipped for Broadband Internet access.
This is a non-smoking house, but guests may smoke outside if they
wish

Meals & Diets:
A full Scottish, or our substantial Continental Breakfast is served
in the dining room that features images and items from India and
other parts of Asia, and a unique mirror, made for us by my architect
brother. Evening meals and packed lunches are available if arranged
24 hours or more in advance. We are pleased to discuss menus and
any special requirements with you. Vegetarian, Asian and other special
diets can be catered for, so please ask at time of booking what
we have available.

|
Grounds and Gardens:
The grounds around the house are a mix of lawns with interesting
mature trees, private garden plots and largely wild woodland. Ancient
stone bridges cross the burn that runs (sometimes) through the woods,
and numerous paths can give a pleasant and reasonably long stroll
around the grounds that guests are welcome to explore.

|
Medieval Ice House
|
You might enjoy such finds as our medieval ice house (THE fridge
to have in the 1500's) and the dovecot, from a time when pigeon
eggs were the norm before the familiar chickens were introduced
to this country from the Middle East.
|
|
Scattered throughout the grounds, traces remain of other buildings
and old stonework from the heyday of the house to pique the curiosity
of archaeologically-minded guests as to what the place must once
have looked like. Little now remains, though, of the chapel and
fox hound kennels that would once have been an important part of
the estate.

Local Wildlife:
At different times of the year, there is an abundance of wildlife
to enjoy. Birds of prey, such as Sparrow Hawks, Owls and Buzzards
are often to be seen. There are a number game birds such as pheasants
and partridge, and occasionally some snipe, although these are no
longer hunted. A well-established rookery is next to the house,
but we have many smaller birds from Woodpeckers to Wrens. There
are always rabbits around - a favourite with the children - but
you might also see grey squirrels, hedgehogs, foxes and even a deer
or two. Butterflies abound in the summer and include Tortoiseshells,
Peacocks, Red Admirals, Meadow Browns, Whites and several less-frequent
visitors such as Small Coppers, Orange Tips, Brimstones and some
of the Blues. St. Germains is a natural haven to relax in and enjoy.
We look forward to having you stay with us.
